The City of Unley is calling for South Australian artists of all ages and career stages to enter the All Connections to Unley Art Prize, which is returning for its second instalment.

Entries are now open for artworks that represent a personal connection to the City of Unley, with a major prize of $5000 on offer to the overall winner. A $500 Elected Members Choice Award will also be awarded and artwork from finalists will be exhibited at the Hughes Gallery in June.

The winning artwork will be reproduced as posters on public bins and limited-edition bin stickers will be available to City of Unley residents.

The City of Unley Mayor Michael Hewitson said the initiative was in support of the growing arts community in Unley and aimed to provide additional opportunities within the City of Unley for artists to create exhibit artwork.

“We want to show off our gorgeous city through the eyes of the talented artists of Unley and all of South Australia and encourage artists of every calibre to continue to contribute to our arts culture,” Mayor Hewitson said.

“Art is a catalyst to increasing diversity and representation, so we encourage art from artist at all career stages and all cultural backgrounds, forms and mediums.”

In 2019, the competition will require entrants to explore a connection to Unley, which is open to each artist’s interpretation.

City of Unley Coordinator of Cultural Development Matthew Ives said the inaugural award winner Peter Barnes had set a high benchmark for the competition with his work ‘God and Mammon’.

“We want to see creative interpretation take centre stage, something I believe Peter Barnes did extremely well,” Mr Ives said.

“His piece was able to capture a collision of two worlds within Unley, which really impressed the judges in 2016.”

Entries will be judged by a panel consisting of a City of Unley Elected Member, a representative from the Art Gallery of South Australia and the City of Unley Cultural Development Coordinator.

Artworks may be two or three-dimensional, any medium and will be subject to a pre-selection process by the judging panel based upon digital images submitted. The finalist list will be published on the City of Unley website from May 10, 2019.

Entries can be submitted via the City of Unley website with an image of the artwork and a 60-word description of how the piece is connected to Unley. Applications are open until April 8 and finalist artworks will be exhibited at the Hughes Gallery from June 7- 28.
