New Smoking Legislation

The state government is seeking feedback from Council on proposed changes to the Tobacco Product Regulations Act: Smoke Free Outdoor Eating and Drinking Areas. The proposal is to ban smoking in all venues from 2016. Although this state was a leader when it first introduced some bans on smoking (1999, dining areas and 2007 enclosed areas in pubs) it has gradual fallen behind in best practice, both the rest of Australia and overseas. The proposed legislation would see all areas where people eat/drink being smoke free.  The purpose of this would be to;
  • Contribute to de-normalising smoking
  • Disassociate smoking activity from drinking activity in public areas
  • Reduce opportunities for uptake and relapse of smoking
  • Improve the amenity of hospitality venues and precincts.
